裁断も終わり１Fで縫製が始まったStorm Cats Drive Jacket
専務が早速UNION SPECIALの35800で巻き縫いをスタートしています。
今回のJKは初期のVintageのフラシ仕様を再現している為、通常で有ればデニムとブランケットを一緒に巻き縫いするのですがStorm Cat’s Driveはブランケットのみで巻き縫いする必要が有ります。が、ブランケットのみの巻き縫いは生地がザックリとしてるのでとても巻きにくい。縫い直しをしてもすぐに生地の糸がほつれるし、生地が伸びるので距離も合わせづらい。そりゃあフラシ仕様はすぐに仕様変更になる訳だし、50’sのストアブラウンドのブランケット付きって巻き縫いじゃないのが多いよね。って思いました。

作ってて思いますが、やっぱりジーンズ作りはアートでは無く製造業。
このウール生地の巻き縫い然り、生地の例を挙げるとWabashなんかはインディゴで染めて、わざわざそのインディゴの色を抜いて柄を作るんですが、手間もお金もかかります。その手間とお金を削る方向に進化してきた理由は、”生産効率”のため。
各工程を工夫して試行錯誤して常に改善した事が、時を経て”短期間のみ作られたレアモデル”を産んだ理由なんだと思います。
アートとして美しさや機能美のためにではなく、あくまで製造工程上の理由だったんだろうと自分達で作ってみると、そう感じさせられます。裁断後、少し増産になるよと声をかけた時の工場長やスタッフのどんよりした恨めしい表情がその裏付けだったり…

現在少しだけ予定より増産可能になった事により追加で受付中です。

Our production team has started to sew the wool fabrics by Union Special 35800.
According to our team, it’s the most difficult to lap-seam this wool fabric out of all TCB jackets made so far because the fabric is soft and rough. For the lined jackets we have made so far, we could lap seam the wool together with the denim fabric so it was much easier. It takes 5 times more to sew a single jacket for this Storm Cats Drive. If you are familiar with sewing, you know how stressful it is that you can’t go smoothly because of the fabric. And our guys said to me that it’s a nightmare to sew this jacket with Union Special, we need to change the pattern for sure if we make this lined jacket again.

Maybe the similar discussion happened in the past and I guess that’s exactly why this separated wool lining detail was seen only for quite a short period of time. Nowadays, some people say making jeans is the same as making arts and some customers say that TCB’s work is like an art piece but I don’t think that way. Every detail change was there only for the manufacturing reason. Untiring efforts by people back then and improvements made led to some unique details only for a short period, and ultimately to a super rare piece we pay tons of money for now.
