私が着用していたジーンズがサイズアウトしたことをきっかけに、
そして、児島のさまざまな職人たちの技術を、
TCBならではのやり方で紹介したいと思い、
このプロジェクトは始まりました。
少し自虐的ではありますが、
「太っていた頃の自分のジーンズを“録音”して、
みなさんに気軽に楽しんでもらえたら」
という想いから、
このシリーズを Fat Cats Records と名付けました。
名前の通り、このジーンズは“record”されています。
だからこそ、さまざまな体型の方が、
さまざまなサイズ感で穿いていただくことが出来ます。
そんなプロジェクトを可能にしてくれたのが、
次の世代を担っていってほしいと思っている若手のホープ、
美東有限会社の RYOTA 君です。
彼の技術と、洗い場でのみんなへの“熱の伝導力”がなければ、
この企画は完成しなかったと思います。
製品の完成のタイミングで、
普段から TCB の KIDS オーバーオールを着てくれている
息子君たちと記念撮影をさせてもらいました。
それは技術の話だけではなく、
「児島でのジーンズづくりが、この先も続いていってほしい」
という願いと、
“好きなことをして、大切な人を守りながら生きていく”
その覚悟を、少しだけ形にしたかったからです。
そして、実は――
RYOTA 君のことを考えると書くかどうか迷いましたが、
彼の義理のお父さんには、
私が20代の頃、本当にお世話になりました。
独立を考えていた時、
「無理でしょ」と言われるのを覚悟して相談したら、
返ってきたのは
「絶対やった方がいい！」という言葉でした。
私はまだ、何も恩返しが出来ていません。
でも時を経て、
次の世代とつながり、
児島を少しでも盛り上げることで、
結果的に“ONE WAYの恩返し”が出来たらいいなと思っています。
これからも、
児島全体で、楽しく、面白く、
そして素敵なジーンズを作り続けていけたら。
そんなことを思うばかりです。
This project began when the jeans I had been wearing no longer fit me,
and from a desire to introduce the skills of the many craftsmen in Kojima
in a way that only TCB could.
With a little self-mockery, and the hope that
“by recording the jeans I wore when I was heavier,
people might be able to enjoy them casually,”
we named this series Fat Cats Records.
Just as the name suggests, these jeans are truly recorded.
That is why they can be worn by people of many different body types
and in many different fits.
The person who made this project possible is a young talent
we hope will carry the next generation forward —
RYOTA of Mito Co., Ltd.
Without his skill, and without the way he shares his passion with everyone on the wash floor,
this project would never have been completed.
When the products were finished,
we took commemorative photos together with his sons,
who always wear TCB KIDS overalls.
This was not only about technique.
It was our small way of expressing a wish —
that jeans making in Kojima will continue into the future,
and a quiet determination to live by doing what we love,
while protecting the people who matter to us.
To be honest, I hesitated to write this next part,
because it involves RYOTA personally.
But his father-in-law once helped me tremendously when I was in my twenties.
When I consulted him about becoming independent,
I expected to hear something negative —
but instead he said,
“You should absolutely do it.”
I have not yet been able to repay him in any way.
But over time, by connecting with the next generation
and helping to energize Kojima,
I hope that I can offer a quiet, one-way form of gratitude in return.
From here on,
I can only hope that all of Kojima will continue to enjoy
making beautiful, interesting, and wonderful jeans together.
