みなさんがジーンズと付き合う楽しみの醍醐味と言っていいのが、
やはり“色落ち”だと思います。
ヒゲというのは、実はただの線ではなく、
グラデーションだということにお気付きでしょうか。
ヒゲの真下には必ず影があり、
谷になった部分には“溜まり”と呼ばれる、
色の濃い部分が残る。
それはまるで、光と影を見ているようにも思えます。
スポットライトが当たる部分の裏には、
必ず血の滲むような努力がある。
ジーンズの色落ちで“良いヒゲ”を作るには、
着用という時間をかける必要があります。
ヒゲひとつからだけでも、
たくさんの人生の縮図を感じることが出来るのです。
そして今回、
その“光と影”を再現するために、
僕たちがオファーしたのは、
次の世代を担っていってほしいと思っている若手のホープ、
美東有限会社の RYOTA 君でした。
彼の作業場には、
常にさまざまなヒゲを刻んだヴィンテージが飾られていて、
そこからヒゲやダメージのインスピレーションを受けながら、
一本一本に向き合っています。
何度も言いますが、
ヒゲとは、膨らんだ部分の“光”と、
谷になった部分の“影”。
そして彼の作業場の壁には、
RYOTA 君が自作した、
デニムで表現された“森香澄のポートレート”が飾られています。
その胸元に表現された、
光と谷のグラデーションの再現度を見て、
彼に白羽の矢が立ったのは、
もう言うまでもありません。

Beneath every whisker there is always a shadow,
and in the valleys, deeper tones remain —
what we call “pooling.”
It feels almost as if you are looking at light and shadow themselves.
Behind every area that catches the spotlight,
there is always quiet, unseen effort.
To create truly beautiful whiskers on denim,
time — the act of wearing — is essential.
Even from whiskers alone,
you can sense countless compressed stories of life.
And to recreate that play of light and shadow,
we turned to a young talent we hope will carry the next generation forward:
RYOTA of Mito Co., Ltd.
His workspace is always surrounded by vintage denim marked with countless whiskers,
and he studies each piece carefully,
drawing inspiration from their fades and damage
as he works on every single pair.
As we have said again and again,
whiskers are the “light” on raised areas
and the “shadow” in the valleys.
On the wall of his workshop hangs a portrait of Kasumi Mori,
expressed entirely in denim and created by RYOTA himself.
After seeing the remarkable way light and shadow were reproduced
across the curves of that piece,
it goes without saying why he was the one we chose.
