私が着用していたジーンズがサイズアウトしたことをきっかけに、
そして、児島のさまざまな職人たちの技術を、
TCBならではのやり方で紹介したいと思い、
このプロジェクトは始まりました。
少し自虐的ではありますが、
「太っていた頃の自分のジーンズを“録音”して、
みなさんに気軽に楽しんでもらえたら」という想いから、
このシリーズを Fat Cats Records と名付けました。
名前の通り、このジーンズは“record”されています。
だからこそ、さまざまな体型の方が、
さまざまなサイズ感で穿いていただくことが出来ます。
USED加工の工程はあまりにも複雑で、
すべてを追いかけることは正直難しかったのですが、
その中で、ここ数年の進化を強く感じた工程がひとつあります。
それが、ストーンウォッシュ。
洗い釜の中に軽石を入れ、
全体のアタリをつけていく工程ですが、
ジーンズはサイズが変われば、重量が変わります。
そして、釜の中の重量が変われば、
投入する軽石の量によって、
アタリの出方はまったく変わってしまう。
今回は、各サイズの重量をすべて計算し、
洗いの際のジーンズの重量と、
軽石の割合まできちんと揃えたうえで、
加工に臨んでもらっています。
通常であれば、平均値で計算するのかもしれません。
でもそれだと、サイズ28とサイズ40で、
色落ちの仕方にどうしても差が出てきてしまう。
同じ表情にするための、
ほんのひと手間。
友人とラーメン屋に行き、
ひとりは麺をバリカタ、もうひとりは柔らかめで注文して、
同時に着丼したのに、
ちゃんと麺の硬さがそれぞれ調整されている。
あの感動を、ふと思い出しました。（笑）

This project began when the jeans I had been wearing no longer fit me,
and from a desire to introduce the skills of the many craftsmen in Kojima
in a way that is uniquely TCB.
It may sound a little self-deprecating, but with the thought of
“recording the jeans I wore when I was heavier,
and letting people enjoy them casually,”
we named this series Fat Cats Records.
As the name suggests, these jeans are truly recorded.
That is why they can be worn by people of many different body types,
in many different ways.
The USED processing itself is extremely complex,
and it was honestly difficult to follow every step.
But there is one process that made me feel just how much the craft has evolved over the past few years.
That process is stone washing.
Pumice stones are added to the washing drum
to create overall abrasion,
but as jean sizes change, their weight changes as well.
And when the total weight inside the drum changes,
the amount of pumice stone used completely alters how the fades appear.
For this project, we carefully calculated the weight of every size,
and precisely adjusted the ratio between the jeans and the pumice stones
before proceeding with the washing process.
Normally, an average value might be used.
But if we did that, size 28 and size 40 would fade differently.
This is a small extra step taken
to achieve the same expression across all sizes.
It reminded me of going to a ramen shop with a friend —
one orders firm noodles, the other soft —
yet both bowls arrive at the same time,
perfectly adjusted to each preference.
That small consideration always makes me smile.
