ボーダー柄って、英語では “stripe” だから、海外の人にこの話をしても上手く伝わるか分からないけど……
僕はボーダー柄が好きです。
でも、日本語で「横」という言葉には、なぜかちょっとアウトローな匂いが漂います。
横着、横柄、横暴、横領、横槍、横しま、下手の横好き、横○ん、横入り。 “横”が付くと、どこかはみ出した印象になる。
でも僕は、そんな“横”というボーダーが好きなんです。
一方で、“border”という英単語には、まったく違う響きがあります。
特に “No Border” という言葉を、僕はとてもポジティブに捉えています。
限界なんて、結局は自分の中に作ってしまうもの。
だったらそのボーダーを、自分で取っ払えばいい。
人と人が、国や立場を越えて仲良くできる──そんな“心の国境を外す”意味でも、“No Border”という考え方が大好きです。
だからTCBの2階、階段のそばには、 世界中のボーダー柄を着た有名人たちが肩を並べて微笑む “No Border” という作品を飾っています。
アメリカで、かつて塀の中の人たちが着ていた服の柄を、
今この時代に “No Border” な気持ちで、ピースに再現できたなら── それはきっと、すごく素敵なことだと思うんです。

In Japan, we call it border pattern, but in English it’s actually stripes.
So maybe this story won’t make perfect sense to people overseas—
but still, I’ve always loved border patterns.
In Japanese, the word yoko (meaning “horizontal”) somehow carries a hint of being an outlaw.
Yochaku (laziness), ogara (arrogance), obou (violence), ouryou (embezzlement), oyajiri (interruption), yokoshima (wicked), heta no yokozuki (clumsy passion), yokohairi (cutting in line)…
Whenever “yoko” appears, it tends to sound like something going sideways—
something that doesn’t follow the rules.
But that’s exactly why I like it.
I like that kind of “horizontal” spirit—the border itself.
On the other hand, the English word border has a completely different nuance.
Especially the phrase No Border—I take it in a very positive way.
Because limits are something we draw inside ourselves.
And if that’s true, then we can also be the ones to erase them.
To me, “No Border” means tearing down the walls between people—
living without borders in our hearts.
That’s why on the second floor of TCB, near the staircase,
there’s a piece called No Border, showing famous people from all over the world smiling together in border-striped shirts.
And if we could recreate, with a peaceful No Border spirit,
the very same pattern once worn by those behind the walls in America—
I think that would be something truly beautiful.
