Kyun Dreams of America
The color of the air conditioner we were installing in the fitting room felt a little out of place, so I asked Kyun, “Why don’t we paint it white?”
The first thing he did was throw on his Cat Head Jacket to dress the part.
I’m sure he was imagining himself as one of those DIY-loving dads you might find in an old J.C. Penney or Sears catalog.
Watching him reminded me of an ivory-colored vintage storage cabinet I once bought from an antique shop.
I loved its character and imagined that, as the ivory paint gradually wore away, the natural wood underneath would begin to show, making it look even better.
But what actually appeared beneath the ivory paint was bright green.
“Green furniture?” I remember wondering in my twenties.
Now, however, I find myself drawn to those aspects of American culture that aren’t so familiar in Japan—painting over just about anything whenever you feel like changing its color, or buying a house with some of the furniture still inside.
Meanwhile, Kyun was clearly enjoying himself, standing on a stepladder and playing the part of a painter.
He even deliberately got some paint on his Cat Head Jacket and looked very pleased with himself.
In his own way, he has made the fitting room a little more comfortable so everyone can enjoy shopping even during the summer heat.
We look forward to seeing you at the Factory Shop this August!
