VintageのGジャンに使われていたBlanketを元に、Tシャツの生地を作りたい。
そう考えて、元ネタを生地屋さんに見せた時、提案していただいたのが「フロートインレー編み」という方法でした。
そして、Vintageのガラ紡が持つ、あのリサイクル感を再現するために選んだのが、TOP染めのジャズネップ糸です。
この糸を使うことで、表面に色の違うネップがポツポツと現れます。
均一に整った新しい生地というより、再生繊維を使って織り上げられた元ネタのBlanketのような、色の混ざりや奥行きのある表情を作ることができました。
完成した生地は、正直、想像以上でした。
そして何より嬉しかったのは、完成した生地を見た生地屋さんが、
「こんなことをしたのは初めてです！」
と、一緒になって喜んでくれたこと。
Tシャツの発表を、私たちと同じように楽しみにしてくれていることも、本当に嬉しく思っています。
ただ、一つだけ懸念があります。
糸屋さんによると、今回使用したジャズネップ糸は現在新しく生産されておらず、残っている在庫がなくなり次第、終了になる糸とのことです。
あとどれくらい在庫が残っているのか、正確なところまでは分かりません。
デニムを作っていても時々感じますが、昔ながらの物づくりを、いつまで同じように続けられるのかは分かりません。
少しでも長く続けられるように、TCBも微力ながら抗っていきたい。
でも、まずは今、この糸を使って、この生地を作れたことに感謝したいと思います。
そして、完成を楽しみに待ってくれている生地屋さんの気持ちも一緒に、丁寧に、一生懸命、お客様へお届けできたらと思っています。
I wanted to create a T-shirt fabric based on the blanket lining found in vintage denim jackets.
When I brought the original piece to our fabric maker, they suggested using a technique called “float inlay knitting.”
To recreate the irregular, recycled character of vintage gara-bo spinning, we chose a top-dyed jazz-nep yarn.
This yarn creates small flecks of different colors across the surface.
Rather than the perfectly uniform appearance of a newly made fabric, it gives the material the depth and mixture of colors found in the original blanket, which was woven from recycled fibers.
Honestly, the finished fabric exceeded my expectations.
But what made me happiest was the reaction of the fabric maker when they saw it.
“This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this!”
They were genuinely excited about what we had created together.
Knowing that they have been looking forward to the release of this T-shirt just as much as we have makes me truly happy.
There is, however, one concern.
According to our yarn supplier, the jazz-nep yarn used for this fabric is no longer being produced. Once the remaining stock is gone, that will be the end of it.
We do not know exactly how much yarn is still available.
Working with denim, I often find myself thinking about this. We simply do not know how long we will be able to continue making things in these traditional ways.
TCB wants to do its small part to push back against that and help keep this kind of craftsmanship alive for as long as possible.
But for now, I simply want to be grateful that we were able to use this yarn and create this fabric.
Together with the feelings of the fabric makers who have been eagerly waiting for its release, we hope to deliver it to our customers with care, sincerity, and everything we have.
