Cats Drive を約3年ぶりに復活させたタイミングで、
お馴染み、アメリカ・ミネソタ州の大工さんから、とても素敵な写真が届きました。
リアルワークで着用してくれている Cats Drive。
今回の復活にあたって生地のレシピをアップデートしたので、完全に同じ色落ちサンプルとはなりませんが、少しでも参考になれば嬉しいです。
ただ、色目そのものは変えていません。
私たちが狙っているのは、あの Vintage のセンタータグに感じる、少し乾いたような青。
新品の時に完成している色ではなく、穿き込んで、働いて、擦れて、ようやく見えてくる色です。
この写真を見ると、その方向性は間違っていなかったのかなと思います。
特に好きなのは、耳のアタリの出方。
Cats Drive は、脇の地縫いを縦二重環縫いのミシンで縫っています。
そのため、脇にしっかりとチェーンステッチの厚みが残り、穿き込むことで、そのゴロゴロした部分をデニムが拾ってくれます。
ただ耳が付いているだけではなく、
ただチェーンステッチで縫っているだけでもなく、
その縫製仕様が、ちゃんと色落ちとして表に出てくる。
ここが、このジーンズの面白いところだと思います。
馬に跨るために考えられたジーンズ。
当時は機能だったものが、時代を越えるとデザインに見える。
そして穿き込まれることで、今度は色落ちの理由になる。
ジーンズの面白さって、いつもそういうところにある気がします。
Just as we brought Cats Drive back for the first time in about three years, we received some wonderful photos from our familiar carpenter in Minnesota, USA.
These are Cats Drive jeans being worn for real work.
For this revival, we have updated the fabric recipe, so they will not serve as an exact fading sample for the new production. Still, I hope they can be a helpful reference in some way.
The color itself has not changed.
What we are aiming for is that slightly dry-looking blue we feel from the vintage center tag.
Not a color that is already complete when brand new, but a color that slowly appears after being worn, worked in, rubbed, and lived in.
Looking at these photos, I feel that our direction was not wrong.
What I especially like is the way the selvedge fades.
On Cats Drive, the side seams are sewn with a double-needle chain stitch machine.
Because of that, the thickness of the chain stitch remains firmly along the side seam, and as the jeans are worn, the denim picks up that rough, uneven texture.
It is not just that they have selvedge.
It is not just that they are sewn with chain stitching.
The sewing specification itself appears on the surface as fading.
That is one of the most interesting parts of these jeans.
Jeans that were originally designed with horseback riding in mind.
What was once a function begins to look like design as time passes.
And after being worn, it becomes the very reason for the fading.
I feel that this is where the true fun of jeans always lies.
