10年以上作り続けているSeamenシリーズ。
USNのステンシルの雰囲気を再現したくて、プリント方法をどうするか悩んでいました。色々試した中で、一番カッコよかったのが「筆によるステンシル」。でも、手間もかかるし、失敗のリスクもある…。どうしようかな？と迷っていたとき、Workersの舘野さんがこう言ってくれました。

「どうせ生産量が大したことないんだから、それを強みにした方がいい！」

その言葉に背中を押されて、手描きでの製作を決意。それから10年以上、描き続けています。今では生産量も増えて、プリント工場に頼めばコストは抑えられるはず。でも、筆で描いたからこその雰囲気が好きで、経年変化も素晴らしい。だから、これからも手描きで作り続けます。

I’ve been making the Seamen series for over 10 years now.
Back then, I was struggling to find the right printing method to recreate the look of USN stencils. What I found the coolest was stenciling with a brush. But it was time-consuming, and there was always the risk of messing up…

While I was debating what to do, Tateno from Workers gave me some great advice:

“Since you’re not producing that many anyway, why not turn that into an advantage?”

That pushed me to start hand-painting each piece. Over the years, production volume has grown, and honestly, outsourcing to a print factory would definitely be more cost-effective. But I still love the unique character that only hand-painting can achieve, and the way it ages over time is just incredible.

So, I’ll keep doing it by hand.
