私が半年ほど着用している Late S40’s Jeans。
まだ写真に撮ると色落ちは控えめに見えますが、実物を手に取ると素晴らしい色落ちの始まりが感じられます。個人的にとても気に入っている一本です。

このLate S40’sの生地を作る際に参考にした資料にはこう記されています。
「Vintageから届いたメッセージに耳を傾け、経糸だけで2種類を準備しました」

私たちはヴィンテージデニムの再現にあたって、生地の色落ちや風合いをじっくり観察し、その当時の背景に思いを巡らせました。以下は私たちの妄想と仮説です。

昔の生地を見ていると、糸作りの段階でどうしても太さが均一にならず、結果としてムラ糸になります。このムラ糸が色落ちにも影響し、独特な表情を生み出しているのです。
しかし、ここで私たちは疑問を持ちました。

「経糸に使われているムラ糸の太さは、本当に一つの数字で収まるのか？」

ヴィンテージの糸を計測するたびに結果が異なることもあります。
そのため、今回は経糸に2種類の糸を混ぜる方法を採用しました。

例えば、1890年代の生地（No.2）では、4種類の糸を混ぜて再現しましたが、Late S40’sでは当時の背景を考慮し、以下のような設定で作っています。

経糸には7.5番の長くて弱いムラ糸と6.5番の短くて強いムラ糸をブレンド
緯糸（横糸）は縦糸の半分くらいのムラ感を持つ6番手の糸
この混ぜ方が、80年前の混沌とした時代背景を再現するカギだと考えました。

I’ve been wearing my Late S40’s Jeans for about six months now.
Although the fade is still subtle in photos, you can really see the beautiful evolution of the fabric in person. This pair has already become one of my favorites.

When we developed the fabric for the Late S40’s, the reference documents said:
“We listened to the message from vintage fabrics and prepared two types of warp yarns.”

To faithfully recreate the texture and fading characteristics of vintage jeans, we carefully observed the fabric and reflected on its history. Below is a little of our imagination and hypotheses that led to this creation.

Back in the day, it was difficult to maintain a consistent yarn thickness during spinning, resulting in slubby yarns with uneven texture. This irregularity gave the fabric its distinctive fade and character over time.
That got us thinking:

“Can the thickness of slubby yarn truly be defined by a single number?”

When analyzing vintage fabrics, different measurements can yield different results.
So, instead of focusing on a single thickness, we decided to blend two types of warp yarns for this fabric.

For example, when we recreated an 1890s fabric (No.2), we blended four types of yarns. This time, for the Late S40’s, we aimed for a simpler mix, keeping in mind the chaotic era of 80 years ago.

Here’s how we did it:

Warp yarns: A blend of 7.5-count long, soft slub yarn and 6.5-count short, strong slub yarn
Weft yarns: 6-count yarn with a moderate slub character, about half the slubbiness of the warp
We believe this combination captures the essence of those old fabrics and the spirit of that era.
